The best places to go: Ice Skating in Dallas, Plano, and the surrounding area

These are the best places to go ice skating – for open skating times, private or group lessons, and even learning to play hockey.

Learn to Skate and/or a Try for Free Program is the best place to start.

Rental skates are available at all rinks, and are definitely the right skates to start with until you feel confident that your child is enjoying themselves!

Rentals are, however, known for not being particularly comfortable so if your kiddo seems to like skating but their feet hurt, you might consider buying a pair of inexpensive or used skates.

Skates are available for purchase at StarCenters and you can often find used skates at Play it Again Sports, on Facebook Marketplace, or on the bulletin board at the rinks.

Choosing an Ice Skating Coach

Your child will meet different instructors as they progress through the Learn to Skate Levels and will likely have a favorite or two!

Start by asking those instructors if your child is ready for a private lesson.

Private lessons generally start around $40/hr and many children start with a 15 min or 30 min private lesson once a week.

Competing in Ice Skating

There are figure skating competitions for all levels, with increasing time and monetary commitment as your child progresses.

Competitions are not all super competitive and are a great way for a child to show off their skills.
