Lake Texoma, borders Texas and Oklahoma and is a short 60-75 minute drive from Plano and the DFW area – perfect for a weekend getaway.
You can also factor in a visit to Eisenhower State Park en route. It has a playground, camping and trails – it allows dirt bike and ATV driving with a permit too!
Renting a cabin or house around Lake Texoma is a great way to escape home for a little while without a long journey – perfect timing to leave after school on Friday and still enjoy a full weekend trip with your family.

Things to do around Lake Texoma
Extreme Sandbox: Did you like Tonka trucks? Extreme Sandbox in Pottsboro allows you to drive full-size bulldozers, loaders or excavators. You can order the ‘crush a car’ package… race a friend or just learn to tinker with these huge and powerful machines. Call 1-855-DIG-4-FUN.
Hiking: Cross Timbers Hiking Trail is about 45 minutes west. It is a great hike along the bluffs overlooking the lake, only about 300′ of elevation change on the trail but it’s nice. During the rainy season, it can be washed out. Google Cross Timbers Hiking Trail for more information.
Driving around the lake: Looking to drive off road without 4-wheeling? Check into Fobb Bottom state recreational hunting area which is close. Also about 45 minutes away, this is Oklahoma State Wildlife Management Area. Over 2000 acres of floodplains, river bottom and cropland. Be careful in the sand near the water. You can hunt on this land (with the appropriate licenses and in the appropriate seasons).
Hagerman Wildlife Refuge: a 12,000 acre area where thousands of migratory birds stop each year. There are a variety tours available, in your car, on a tram, or on the trails. Check out their 2nd Saturday program. The Park office/bookstore is a great place to stop for kids and to learn about the city that is now under water at Lake Texoma.

Lake Texoma Cabins
If you’re anything like me, you’re always looking for quick family friendly escapes. As my kids get older and their sporting and social calendars fill up much faster than mine, even getting away for the weekend is getting difficult.
I’m hesitant to share my new favorite place with you, but friends share, right?
I just had an amazing getaway to Lake Texoma. I feel like I really escaped the hustle and bustle of the city and I feel refreshed and ready to take on anything (well except for that call from school saying my kid is quarantined….).
My difficult to please teens loved the house we stayed in so much, they’ve already asked when we can go back and I’m definitely planning that very soon.
And it’s only a short 60-75 minute drive from the Plano/Frisco area – so totally doable after school on a Friday afternoon.
So, Lake Texoma is just over the border into Oklahoma. It’s a huge lake, perfect for swimming, boating and fishing. And the Lake Texoma State Park is great for hiking and a picnic too.
Joe from Texoma Luxury Rentals set us up with the perfect house. We had a group of 9 (two families) – 4 adults and 5 kids and the kids were aged from 9 through 15. Once he heard that, Joe said the property “Lake Time Bar & Chill” would be just the house for us and he was so right.
The property is a “barndominium” style. Looks like a huge shed from the outside and the inside is decked out with a bar and games room at one end and the 4 bedroom house at the other. There is also another 2 bedroom house on the property and in all, it sleeps up to 20.
We were really impressed with how it was set up and everything we needed was provided, especially in the kitchen.
The games room was the big hit with pool table, foosball, air hockey, shuffle board, ping pong, arcade games, stage, amps and the bar. We had so much fun and it was so nice to have that time with the kids without a phone in between us.
The adults loved the firepit and enjoyed chatting around the fire in the evenings and it was perfect for after dinner s’mores.
This property was just 3 blocks to the shore and about a 20 minute drive to Lake Texoma State Park where we enjoyed a hike.
The house was ideal as a base for those wanting to get out and explore the local area or for those just wanting to stay in and relax all weekend.
Thanks to Melissa Beaumont for sharing her experience of staying at Lake Time Bar & Chill, in Kingston, Oklahoma.

They have multiple properties available in the area depending on the size of your group and some are even pet friendly. And if you need any advice on the right property to choose or things to do in the local area, Joe is incredibly helpful.
Close to everything, yet the stars are stunning at night!
