What do I need for my Passport Appointment?

Ensure you have the following documents with you:

  • Valid Photo IDs (you need 2 types and you can include a Social Security card)
  • U.S. Citizenship document – a long-form version of a birth certificate or naturalization certificate. You can order a certified copy of a Texas birth certificate online or in person. Find more information at the Birth Records webpage of the Texas DSHS.
  • Unsigned DS-11 form (pdf) completed in black ink. The form must be printed single-sided. Blank forms are usually available to complete at your appointment. Arrive early if you have not completed this step.

What else will I need for the Passport Appointment?

  • One passport photo – may be taken on-site.
  • Check or money order made payable to the U.S. Department of State.
  • Debit or credit card to complete payment for any photo and copy fees.
  • If your legal name has changed, then be prepared to present additional documentation such as a marriage certificate or court documents certifying the legal name change.

How do I make an appointment for a passport online?

Most locations will only process passport applications with an appointment scheduled for a passport online.

UTD has a calendar displaying two weeks at a time and their systems auto-updates at midnight, so check early morning during business days for new appointments.

How can I renew a passport in person?

Once you have made an appointment for your passport and arrived at your appointment, ensure you check the right box on your form that you want to renew, and don’t want a new appointment.

Be sure to bring your old passport with you and be prepared that they will likely keep it to send off for processing. I prefer to take a picture of the main passport page before letting it go!

Are there any locations that accept Walk-ins?

UTD accepts walk-ins on Wednesdays and Thursdays from 10am – 12 noon only.

Where should you go to get Passports for Kids that also takes pictures?

When we find locations where the staff are patient with taking pictures of kids (sometimes more than 3 times!) to get them right

These locations are quick and perfectly suited for families with kids to get everything done, including shipping in one place. Many locations will only process a new passport if both parents are at the appointment.

Be sure to make a family appointment if you have multiple passport applications – for kids and parents too. Usually a 30-minute appointment is sufficient for two to three family members and 1 hour for four or more family members.

How long will it take to get my Passport?

It depends. You can pay to expedite your application and this may cut your waiting time by 2 weeks. We hear from local Moms that sometimes they are getting passports back within 3 to 4 weeks and other times it can be 6 to 8 weeks.

The reality is, the quicker you get your appointment set and you can get it sent off to the State Department, the better.

Frequently Asked Questions

When will I get my original documents back?

Usually it will come back within 2-4 weeks of your Passport but the items you send will be returned to you.

Do both parents have to be present at an appointment for a first-time children’s passport?

You can bring a notarized document to authorize the parental permission if one of the parents is unable to be there in person, but we recommend both parents be there if possible.
